I had the best and worst day yesterday in a while. I found out that I no longer have a job for the summer teaching @ PEERS. This comes after I had been told less than two weeks ago to “not worry about it.” Due to lack of enrolment, they are only going to be running one summer class so far…as soon as I heard these words, images of yours truly living in the subway tunnels flashed through my mind…ok, maybe not so serious, but I was feeling anxiety set in and more than a little defeated.
So, to perk myself up I did what any self-respecting individual would do…I took the day off work as a mental-health-get-my-shit-together-day. I spent the morning looking for jobs in the city, and there are some, but most aren’t really what I’m after…you know what they say tho, beggars can’t be choosers. After applying for a few jobs that fit the bill, I was feeling much better about things and have decided that if my boss can’t come up with anything for me, it’s not really her fault…but, by the same token, she can’t get angry with me for seeking out new and gainful employment. Hopefully I will have some news on that front by weeks’ end.
The rest of the day was spent @ Anita and Corey’s house. His mom & dad have recently upgraded their bbq, so guess who got the hand-me-downs? I was really excited by the thought of eating honest-to-goodness bbq, cooked on a proper gas grill. Let me elaborate…the Taiwanese have a very different idea of what bbq is from you or I…what they call bbq’ing is what we would call hibatchi…cooking over hot coals. Any of you who have had the misfortune of using this method will know that it takes an age to cook something…they prefer this method for some strange reason and as such, I have been unable to locate a bbq as I know it. Hence the reason for nearly pissing my pants in sheer delight at the prospect of eating real bbq. And man, did we eat! Steaks, pork cutlets, onions, garlic, mushrooms, meatballs…it was a feast and a half. Not to mention the beers which only added to the experience…it had been such a long time since I’d eaten anything that tasted that good, and it reminded me of Canadian summers…I think I might even had a little tear in my eye…J
