planes, trains and conspiracy theories
i'm trying to plan out the best route for our up and coming trip to thailand, but it seems as if there is collusion between the airline, bus and railway authority. let me elaborate. leesh and myself will be traveling to bangkok, then onto koi samui, a small island in the andaman sea. bangkok and koi samui aren't exactly close to one another so the options to get there are a)fly b)take a bus/ferry or c) take a train/bus/ferry combo. option A is a little more money than we want to spend, but it would get us there in no time at all. option B is the cheapest, but it could be very uncomfortable as it will mean 13 glorious hours jostling about on a bus. the last option seems to be the pick of the litter...it's an overnight train, sleeper at that and is still a cheap option. our friends are choosing to fly there in order to maximize beach time, but for us thrifty travellers we've decided on option C. sounds simple, no? ok, here's the problem...our flight arrives in bangkok on monday night @ 21:26pm...the last train leaves from the train station, which is downtown, @ 22:50pm...that leaves next to no time to get from point a to point b and although not impossible, highly improbable. the next train leaves @ 12:00 the next day, which means we will arrive in koi samui 12 hours later, in essence losing an entire day of vacation, traveling on a bus. really, the only option available is to take the flight which leads me to think these companies are in cahoots with one another. you would think in a country like thailand, which is very dependant on tourism would make traveling by cheaper methods of transportation a little more convenient to the budget travelers' timetable. see, i think they know
when the majority of flights come in and try to make you spend more money in their country, whether it be a domestic flight (not surprisingly, all thai-owned and operated) or by spending at least one night in one of their hotels. is it too much to ask to be able to get off the plane, hop on train and be on my merry way to my final destination? i mean, who do i have to sleep with in order to make this happen?? so, it looks as if i will have to spend the extra money in order to make the most of my time in thailand by taking the flight....you've won this round thailand.

Samui has one of the coolest little airports I have ever been to. Count that as a big bonus for the financial extra.
